Augustine F. Bruce, KC

A Master of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador

Prior to obtaining his Bachelor of Laws Degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1984, Mr. Bruce was employed by the Federal Department of Transport, working in various locations in Newfoundland and Labrador, and in Moncton, New Brunswick.

 

Mr. Bruce was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1985, and has been engaged full-time in the practice of law since then. He is the founder and principal of A. F. Bruce Law. He is a Master and Taxing Officer of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

Mr. Bruce's practice focuses primarily on administrative law, litigation, health care law, labour law, and insurance law. Mr. Bruce has appeared in all levels of Court in Newfoundland and Labrador, Federal Tax Court, Federal Court Trial Division, and Federal Court of Appeal, as well as before many Administrative Tribunals and Boards in the province.

 

Mr. Bruce has extensive experience in all aspects of health care law issues, and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada in the specialty of Health Care Law every year since 2008. In addition, he has been named the Best Lawyers' 2014, 2020, and 2024 St. John's Health Care Law Lawyer of the Year.

 

In the area of administrative law, Mr. Bruce has represented a number of professional regulatory boards as general counsel, has assisted in the drafting of primary and subordinate legislation governing the groups in question, and represents several such associations/boards in a wide range of their activities. He continues to provide advice and representation with respect to disciplinary activities carried out by those regulatory bodies.

 

In the area of labour law, Mr. Bruce has been directly involved in negotiating and litigating labour law issues on behalf of employers, has been directly involved in negotiating collective agreements, and has presented in a variety of labour arbitration cases.

 

Mr. Bruce has litigation and file management experience in a wide range of insurance-related matters, including personal injury and property damage claims involving automobile and other types of insurance coverage, coverage disputes, and claims involving disability insurance issues.

 

Mr. Bruce has been a Member of the joint NL Law Society/Canadian Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Committee, and has made presentations to various professional and employer organizations in the areas of administrative law, employment law, labour law, human rights law, professional liability, officers’ and directors’ liability, and health care law.

 

Mr. Bruce has chaired the Discipline Committee of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Practice Rules Compliance Committee of the Law Society, the Complaints Authorization Committee of the Law Society and the Education Committee of the Law Society, and is a former President of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
